Coimbatore 3rd March 2020: AVP signs MoU with CCRAS to conduct Phase III Multi Centric Clinical Trial on Rheumatoid Arthritis.
The Government of India has come forward to fund the first ever Multi Centric Phase III Clinical Trial on the efficacy of Ayurveda in the management of Rheumatoid Arthritis. The study would be done by AVP Research Foundation in collaboration with Central Council for Research in Ayurveda (CCRAS). The study is based on the previous pilot study conducted by AVP in 2003. In 2003, the National Institutes of Health, USA awarded a Grant through the University of Washington, Seattle to conduct a clinical trial comparing the efficacy and safety of classical Ayurvedic treatment and standard Allopathic treatment for rheumatoid arthritis. The outcomes of this study was published in leading research journals like Annals of Rheumatic Diseases and Journal of Clinical Rheumatology. The study was also recommended as a blueprint for future studies on Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) by Dr. Edzard Ernst, a vehement critic of CAM. The paper published in JCR also won the prestigious European Society of Integrative Medicine “Award for Excellence in Integrative Medicine Research”. This was a major step for recognition of Ayurveda in Europe.
Now, Government of India has come forward to take this study to the next level as part of positioning Ayurveda as a forefront medical system capable of handling conditions including auto-immune disorders. The agreement to pursue the study was signed between Dr. PR Krishnakumar, Chairman of AVP Research Foundation and Dr. Shasidhar Doddamani representing CCRAS on 20th of this month at Coimbatore. Apart from Coimbatore AVP Hospital, Regional Ayurveda Research Institute for Metabolic Disorders, Bengaluru and Raja Ramdeo Anandilala Central Ayurveda Research Institute for Cancer, Mumbai will be the clinical sites of the study. Dr. PR Krishnakumar after signing the MoU said that this is one of the major initiatives of this government to position India’s medical wealth for the benefit of the world. Renowned physician Dr. KG Raveendran would be the treating physician of the study at Coimbatore and Dr. Somit Kumar the would be co-investigator of the study. The study is designed by the world renowned rheumatologist Dr. Daniel Furst, currently the Director of Clinical Research at Arthritis Association of South California (AASC) and he would be mentoring the study.
First ever Europe based Ayurveda Clinical Trial on Diabetes to be initiated:
AVP Group has also initiated a Clinical Trial on the efficacy of Ayurveda on management of Diabetes. This study will be executed in Lativa in Collaboration with University of Lativa. This would be the first of its kind wherein efficacy of Ayurveda in the management of Diabetes population outside India. The study is headed by renowned Endocrinologist Dr. Valdis Pirags from University of Latvia and this would be a benchmark study that would position Ayurveda as viable medical system outside India also, said Dr. Somit Kumar, Director of AVP Research Foundation, the institution that is spearheading the research. He also said Ministry of AYUSH would be funding the project through the International Co-operation Scheme. in the press release by the institution.
