NO MORE WORRIES ABOUT PCOD

Picture
Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is a female endocrine disorder occurring during the reproductive age and affecting approximately 5-12% of the female population. It is commonly accompanied by obesity and menstrual irregularity, and can lead to infertility. The root cause of this condition can be either a lifestyle habit or genetic. Obesity can be either a cause or an effect of PCOS. Ultimately, PCOS is an emotionally distressing problem for women with various physical and physiological consequences.
In Ayurveda, PCOS comes under the chapter of Yoni Vyapat (utero vaginal disorders) and is one of 20 diseases in that section.

Symptoms:

Irregular periods or Skipped periods,Heavy bleeding ,Mood swings,Cysts in Ovary,Obesity,Acne,Scanty scalp hair or loss of hair,Hair growth (hirsutism) Excessive hair on the face and body,Insulin resistance leading to Diabetes,Darkening of the skin,Headaches.

Pathology in ayurveda:

In Ayurveda, PCOD is caused due to an imbalance of any of the two doshas - Pitta (Fire) and Kapha (Water). Aggravated Pitta causes contamination of the dhatus or tissues like blood and plasma. This causes a buildup of toxins or ama in the body.
In PCOS patients, these toxins get accumulated in the channels of the mind, leading to an imbalance of hormones secreted by the pituitary gland. This results in an imbalance of female hormones and causes the formation of ovarian cysts which is nothing but a collection of fluids within the ovary, anovulatory periods or periods with no ovulation, etc.

Cause of PCOS:

PCOS occurs when a hormonal imbalance affects the follicular growth during the ovarian cycle. Instead of bursting and releasing an egg, the affected ovarian follicle remains in the ovary. The follicle then forms into cysts, and during each ovarian cycle multiple new cysts can arise. ‘Poly’ means many, hence the name: polycystic ovarian syndrome.
Improper diet and lifestyle, including mental stress and lack of physical exercise, as well as prolonged and excessive consumption of hormonal contraceptive pills are major causes of PCOS.

PCOD - How Ayurveda Treatment Can Help?Panchakarma is the first line of treatment for PCOS. An ayurvedic specialist prepares a personalized program after a detailed consultation.Panchakarma treats the root cause by eradicating toxins from the reproductive system: The uterus, ovaries, fallopian tubes and the vagina are cleansed, and hormones are balanced. Some of the main procedures include virechana (therapeutic purgation), uttar vasti (uterovaginal enema) and vasti (colonic enema).
Single herbs  such as Triphala (Which is rich in vitamin C- a powerful natural antioxidant that helps in reducing inflammation by reducing free radicals), Kanchanar, Trikatu, Guggul, Dashamool, Shatavari( which  helps in controlling high levels of insulin due to PCOS, due to its phytoestrogen or natural plant-based estrogen levels), Shatapushpa (Which  helps to grow eggs naturally and helps to split follicles naturally), Guduchi (Which helps in revitalizing body tissues and lowering insulin resistance),Aloe Vera(it helps in regularizing menstrual cycles and promote normal menstruation. It also normalizes hormonal imbalance),Varuna, Pippali, Punarvana, Chitraka, Shunthi  helps to manage PCOS .

Diet recommendation for PCOD:

  • Avoid all sugary foods and artificial sweeteners.
  • Reduce salt intake during menstruation
  • Increase the consumption of fruit & vegetables.
  • Choose whole grains, which contain all parts of the grain.
  • Limit the intake of saturated fats that are found in red meat, chicken, commercially prepared snack foods and deep fried food.

Lifestyle Recommendations for PCOS:

  • Manage stress and anxiety. Reducing stress can help balance your hormones.
  • Stay well hydrated by drinking 1.5 – 2 litres of filtered water daily.
  • Perform  moderate exercise of 45 min daily.

Ayurveda is an ancient Indian medical system that has been practiced for over 5000 years. It focuses on the belief that health and wellness depend on a delicate balance between the mind, body, and spirit. Dinacharya, meaning "daily routine" in Sanskrit, is a crucial aspect of Ayurvedic philosophy and is considered one of the pillars of good health.
Here are some of the key reasons why dinacharya is important in Ayurveda:
  • Regulates the body's natural rhythms: Dinacharya helps to regulate the body's natural rhythms, such as digestion, elimination, and sleep. By following a daily routine, you can help your body to work at its best and prevent any imbalances that may arise.
  • Promotes mental clarity: A daily routine also helps to promote mental clarity, as it allows you to structure your day and prioritize your tasks. By reducing stress and anxiety, dinacharya can help you to focus and be more productive.
  • Supports physical health: Dinacharya is designed to support physical health, by incorporating various self-care practices such as exercise, meditation, and proper nutrition. By following these practices, you can help to prevent diseases and promote overall well-being.
  • Balances the doshas: Ayurveda recognizes three main doshas, or energies, that govern the body: vata, pitta, and kapha. Dinacharya helps to balance these doshas by incorporating activities and habits that support each one. For example, a morning yoga routine can help to balance vata, while a balanced diet can help to balance pitta.
  • Enhances self-awareness: By following a daily routine, you become more aware of your habits and patterns, and can learn to identify any areas where you need to make changes to improve your health and well-being. This heightened self-awareness is a key component of Ayurveda and is essential to good health.
In conclusion, dinacharya is a crucial aspect of Ayurveda and is essential for good health and well-being. By incorporating self-care practices and following a daily routine, you can help to promote mental clarity, balance your doshas, and enhance your overall health. So, try to incorporate Ayurvedic principles into your daily routine and experience the benefits for yourself!

The well-being of new mothers is at the heart of the centuries-old practice of Ayurveda.  Ayurveda, offers a holistic set of guidelines on caring for new mothers and restoring the delicate balance of energies within the postpartum body.Postpartum is a transformative and reinforcing period where there is a total variation in the social environment to being a mother.
why is postnatal care important? The first 42 days after birth lay the ground work for the mother and baby’s health for the next 42 years according to Ayurveda. The process of giving birth and transitioning from being pregnant to no longer pregnant is Vata Dosha aggravating. The key to postpartum care of the mother is to calm vata (the ether and air elements).
The mother is full of the mobile, light, dry, and cold qualities after the loss of energy and blood and fluids, not to mention the loss of a huge space in the abdomen (previously occupied by the baby).
This means that the new mother and those who are taking care of her need to create an environment and diet that is as calming, warm, and nourishing as possible.
The mother needs special care after giving birth to regain the energy and strength. After pregnancy and delivery, she will change both physically and emotionally. Lots of worries and physical discomforts may affect during this postpartum period. The postpartum period is usually six to eight weeks from the day of your delivery. This period is considered highly sensitive and the post-partum care systems (Sutika Paricharya) as per the Ayurveda plays a great emphasis on encouraging fast healing, boosting immunity and improving the production of milk.
For a mother, the first few months after delivery is crucial since the uterus after expanding due to delivery, shrinks back to its normal size. Moreover, the tendons, ligaments, and muscles connected to the uterus begin to regain the power and strength lost during labor.
Postpartum treatments will help you in
  • Restoring your health
  • To re-establish the digestive & metabolic state  of the body
  • Ensure good quantity and quality of breast milk.
  • Normalize the physiological functions & strengthening of the muscles and ligaments.
  • To balance your diet & lifestyle for mothers
  • Helps to improve the quality of eggs which is needed for next fertilization.
RestNew mothers and babies are advised to rest at home for 40 days or six weeks to avoid coming in contact with external energies that may influence the well-being and health of the mother and baby.
Restoring your health
The first 6 weeks is the active care given to the new mother that focuses on restoring the mother’s physiology & psychology that have been exhausted during pregnancy and post-pregnancy time. Preventing mental stress in the mother particularly the next 4-5 months after delivery is crucial.
Re establishing the digestion
New mothers should have freshly prepared warm, soft and soupy foods that are that are easy to digest, balance  vata and restore  agni (the digestive fire). Foods are rich in ghee to promote digestion, keep energy levels high and to ensure stools are soft. Foods are also rich in herbs and spices that expel gas and support lactation
According to Ayurveda, a mother’s diet influences the quality of milk and health of the baby. Palatable foods of liquid or semisolid consistency inclusive of all 6 tastes should be preferred.  Fiber rich foods should be taken to avoid constipation. Take adequate amounts of pulses, nuts raisins, almonds, papaya, leafy vegetables, whole grain breads, etc.Taking 3-4 Gooseberries every day helps in improving the immunity.
Strengthening the muscles and ligaments
These women are given daily hot oil massages either by a family member or an experienced  ladies . These massages are done with nurturing oils such as sesame, coconut, olive etc. After oil massaging, hot water is used for bathing. Hot water is poured on the lower abdomen and the pelvic area.Warm water that has been boiled with Neem leaves are used for bathing for other parts of the body,
Postpartum massages using Dhanwantaram Massage Oil are really essential in the mental, spiritual & physical healing of new mothers. Not only does this process aid in the internal muscular repair for the mother, but it also provides her with some much-needed relaxation time .
Belly Binding
Tummy care can be made by applying a wide belt around waist which helps in shrinking the size of the uterus as well. Tummy should be tightly tied using herbal abdominal cloth bands. This helps in getting back to shape easily as well as the involution of the uterus. C-section ladies should wait at least 2 weeks before abdominal binding to ensure complete healing of the sutures.Belly binding also helps to get rid of the stomach gas. Some benefits of belly binding: promote healthy posture during breast feeding, gently push the stomach muscles back together, reposition the womb, and reduce stretch marks.
Enhancing breast milk
Spices are healing and should be included in every meal. Spices such as fenugreek, cumin, cinnamon, cardamom, fennel will be very good allies to restart your digestion and promote lactation
Helps to improve the quality of eggs :-
Ayurvedic herbal combinations are effectively useful to improve the quality of eggs, like Satavari Gulam,Puli lehyam,Dashamoolarishtam ,Jeerakarishtam,Ashokarishtam ,Dhanwantharam gulika
Lie in bed as much as possible
The sub-dosha of Vata: Apana, which allowed the expulsion of the baby, is a movement that goes down. Your body, your uterus and all your organs and systems need time to find their places. Give it time. A few days is not enough. The gravity of the standing posture is too intense on the body for at least a month.

CANCER CARE AND AYURVEDA

CANCER CARE AND AYURVEDA

What's Cancer ?

Cancer is the second most cause of deaths in the modern world after Cardio vascular Diseases.  It's a disease in which the body's cells multiply uncontrollably and spread to other parts of the body .Cancer can start  any tissue or organ  in the human body, which is made up of a large number of cells. Normally, human cells grow and multiply (through cell division) to form new cells as the body needs them. According to classical textbooks of ayurveda like ‘Charaka’ and ‘Sushruta Samhitas’ cancer is described as inflammatory or non-inflammatory swelling and mentioned either as ‘Granthi’ (minor neoplasm) or ‘Arbuda‘ (major neoplasm)

Sometimes the physiological  process of cell division undergoes drastic variations and abnormal cells, grow and multiply which is pathological in nature. These cells may form tumors, which are lumps of tissue. Tumors can be cancerous or not cancerous (benign).
Cancerous tumors invade nearby tissues and can travel to distant places in the body to form new tumors (This process is called Metastasis).  Many cancers form solid tumors but not in blood cancer(leukemia).

Cause Of Cancer ?

Cancer can be considered as a genetic disease  caused by changes to genes that control the way our cells function and cell division which is triggered by autoimmune factors . Genetic changes that cause cancer can happen because of : a)Errors that occur as cells division.  b)Damage to DNA caused by harmful substances in the environment, such as the chemicals in tobacco smoke, ultraviolet rays from the sun , hazardous chemical exposure etc c)Genes inherited from  parents or family.

Common Types Of Cancers

Types of cancer are usually named for the organs or tissues where the cancers form. The major types of cancer are Carcinoma, Sarcoma, Lymphoma, Myeloma
and Leukemia.

Carcinoma is cancer found in body tissue known as epithelial tissue that covers or lines surfaces of organs, glands, or body structures. for example cancer of the lining of the stomach is called a gastric carcinoma . Squamous cell carcinoma is a type of skin cancer. Most common type of cancer world wide is breast carcinoma , happens in women ..Carcinomas account for 80-90% of all cancer cases.

▶️ Sarcoma is a malignant tumor growing from connective tissues, such as cartilage, fat, muscle, tendons, and bones. Examples of sarcoma include osteosarcoma (of bone) and chondrosarcoma (of cartilage).

▶️ Lymphoma refers to a cancer that originates in the nodes or glands of the lymphatic system, whose job it is to produce white blood cells and clean body fluids, or in organs such as the brain and breast. Lymphomas are classified into two categories: Hodgkin's lymphoma and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.

▶️ Myeloma grows in the plasma cells of bone marrow. In some cases, the myeloma cells may get collected in one bone or in multiple bones. The myeloma cells collect in many bones, forming many bone tumors. This is called multiple myeloma.

▶️ Leukemia also known as blood cancer, is a cancer of the bone marrow that keeps the marrow from producing normal red and white blood cells and platelets.

Ayurveda and Cancer Care

Ayurveda, the indigenous natural system of medicine, originated in Indian Subcontinent  is known for preventing or suppressing various tumors using  natural drugs. Nowadays, many research and clinical studies signify the efficacy of Ayurveda In Cancer Care. The Tridoshas called  Vata ( Neurological Vital Force) , Pitta (Metabolic Vital Force) and Kapha (Developmental Vital Force) are the three vital functional units in human body. In malignant tumors all three systems (Tridoshas) get disarranged and lose mutual coordination that causes tissue damage, resulting in critical condition.Tridoshas cause excessive metabolic crisis resulting in proliferation. Ayurveda subdivides body tissues into seven categories, that is plasma (Rasa); blood (Rakta); muscle (Mamsa); fat (Medas); bone marrow/ nerve (Majja); nerve tissue (asthi) and reproductive tissue (Shukra). The convertion and transformation of each tissues happens due to a metabolic energy called "Dhatwagni" as per ayurvedic concept .The dearrangement of this Dhatwagni is responsible for abnormal tissue proliferation and spread. Ayurveda treatment in cancer focus in stablisation of these metabolic factors and revitalization of damaged cells.

The main goal of Ayurvedic therapy is to find the ultimate cause of an illness while the therapeutic approach of Ayurveda is divided into four categories as Prakritisthapani chikitsa (Health maintenance), Rasayana chikitsa, (Restoration of normal function), Roganashani chikitsa (Disease Cure) which is very important in treatment approach of cancer. Scientifically ayurveda formulations work on multiple biochemical pathways and influence different organ systems all together and nourish the body as a whole by supporting the body's defence mechanism.

Herbs and mineral drugs used in ayurveda contain multiple active principles that often operate synergistically producing therapeutic benefits and lowering the risks of adverse effects; and avoids the need for supplemental therapy to manage cancer after ill effects. Now it is important to raise awareness and encourage implementation of an integrated approach combining Modern Medicine and Ayurved in cancer treatment and post care.

Are naps good for you ?

Picture
Ayurveda describes sleep as a basic instinct of life, essential to all living
beings. We need it to rejuvenate and reenergize our body, mind, and spirit.
According to Ayurveda, a daytime nap is not a good habit. This can lead
to an imbalance between Kapha and Pitta dosha. This imbalance can affect the
body’s optimum functioning, leading to Kapha aggravation, swellings,
heaviness, reduced metabolism, obstructive channels, inflammation, obesity,
etc.Sleeping during the day because you didn’t sleep well the night before will
aggravate kapha and increase kapha imbalances that can lead to fatigue and
obesity.

From the Ayurvedic perspective, afternoon naps for 48 minutes, or
one muhurta, are permitted for children, the elderly, and those who are
emaciated, exhausted from travel, over exerted, have done hard physical activity

Ayurvedic research have shown that an increase in  Vata  during summers
dries several channels of the body. But the production of kapha as well pitta
during this time lubricates the body. So daytime nap is recommended only in
summertime.

People dominated with kapha as well as pitta with sedentary lifestyle,
or obesity, thyroid or diabetes should avoid daytime sleeping. If you are really
tired, then a nap in sitting posture is good as that doesn’t aggravate kapha dosha
so much. But sleep only after 1-1.5hr post meals. Walk for 100 steps post
meals.

DEHA PRAKRUTHI: A Unique Contribution of Ayurveda

Picture
DEHA PRAKRUTHI: A Unique Contribution of Ayurveda

The characteristic personality of an individual determined by the combination of the three doshas is termed as Prakruthi. The concept of Deha Prakruthi is a strong foundation put forth by ayurveda in understanding human constitution. The escalated state of doshas at the time of conception along with various other factors like the quality of sperm and ovum, condition of the uterus, diet and regimens followed by the couples, climatic changes and results of the past deeds etc determines prakruthi. The present description is in the context of Deha Prakruthi. The word Prakruthi means nature or personality and Deha Prakruthi refers to the natural body constitution.

Often we see patients coming up with a request to assess their prakruthi. A skilled physician can find out the prakruthi or the body constitution of the individual through nadee pareksha and by certain other means of examinations like darshana (observation), sparshana (palpation) and prashna (interrogation). Deha Prakruthi has an effect on the body, mind and spiritual make up of an individual. It is genetically determined to an extent which is susceptible to environmental changes. The approach of ayurveda on analysing Deha Prakruthi is quiet detailed and vivid. Lets see how to apply the knowledge of Deha Prakruthi in the field of maintaing and preserving health along with diagnosing and treatment principles.

Despite the fact that there are similarities in mankind, every individual differs from each other in many aspects. Knowledge about ones own Deha Prakruthi helps one to maintain health by adhering to conducive diet and regimens suitable to each climate. One can understand the bodily requirements in a better way and can adopt proper lifestyle. This also helps us to find out which are the diseases one is more prone to suffer from and can act accordingly beforehand.

Deha Prakruthi is the foremost factor which contributes to early prediction of a disease, prevention of the possible effects of the disease or to reduce the worsening of the symptoms, successful prognosis followed by proper selection of the drugs and line of treatment. For example, a Kapha Prakruthi individual is prone to suffer from respiratory ailments as kapha dosha occupies the upper part of the body predominantly. The middle portion of the body is the seat of pitta and so a pitta prakruthi person is likely to suffer from gastric problems. Since the lower part of the body is vata predominant, a vata prakruthi person is more susceptible to diseases affecting the locomotor or nervous system.

Prakruthi of an individual indcates the physical strength or weakness. It is told that kapha prakruthi person have more inbuilt strength, whereas vata prakruthi person is more susceptible to disease as he has less strength and pitta prakruthi person has medium strength. Similarly the nature of the bowel habits are also related to ones prakruthi. A vata prakruthi individual is prone to be constipative, pitta prakruthi person would have a loose consistency of the bowels and a kapha prakruthi person would have medium to normal consistency of bowel movements. Hence this knowledge is utilised to diagnose, treat disease and maintain health.

An individuals health can undergo slight changes with respect to seasonal variations or due to natural changes where in this knowledge of Deha Prakruthi can be applied. During climatic changes one can slowly adopt particular regimens suitable for their prakruthi as well.

Today, most of the diseases we come across are self generated through faulty diet and life style. Autoimmune diseases are increasing at an alarming rate. In such a scenario, analyzing the deha prakruthi helps one to switch over to healthy habits. Unlike, a common diet and regimen, more individualised approach will prove beneficial. Hence, meeting the needs of the body assures good health and peace of mind. An individual can make informed choices as per his bodily requirements. This ultimately helps to achieve a balanced personal, professional and social life.

ASHTANGA AYURVEDA

Picture
ASHTANGA AYURVEDA
Learning Ayurveda is like swimming across a vast ocean of knowledge. Most of us are quiet familiar with the term Ashtanga Ayurveda (8 limbs of Ayurveda). The concepts of Ayurveda are so expansive and vivid. It has no equivalent in other systems of medicine. For the better understanding of this vast science, our ancient seers divided this whole treatise into 8 different sections. Like the branches of a tree from the same trunk, the 8 branches of Ayurveda rooted on the same fundamental basic principles reach the same goal. Let’s have a look at these 8 branches of Ayurveda and what it deals with in general.
  • Kaya Chikitsa: Kaya means body and Chikitsa means treatment. This branch of Ayurveda deals with General Medicine. Various physical and psychological conditions are dealt with here.
  • Bala Chikitsa: As the name suggests, this branch deals with the health conditions of children. It also includes the ante natal and post natal care for begetting a healthy progeny.
  • Graha Chikitsa: This branch deals with the mental disorders. Ayurveda opines that a healthy body lodges a healthy mind. So, a feeble or sick mind is prone to diseases. Ayurveda uses medicines, psychotherapy, religious practices/ rituals according to the faith of the individual in the treatment aspects.
  • Urdhwanga Chikitsa: Urdhwanga refers to the parts of the body above the clavicle. This includes the disorders of Ear, Nose and Throat as well.
  • Salya Chikitsa: Surgical interventions are made use in the treatment aspects. Conditions like hemorrhoids, fistula, pilonidal sinuses, etc, are dealt with here. As we know, Acharya Sushruta is considered to be the Father of Indian Surgery. There are ample references of renal calculi, skin grafting, dissection of dead body and intestinal obstruction kind of conditions in the Vedic texts.
  • Damshtra Chikitsa: This is also called as Agada Tantra which deals with Toxicology. It is in practice since the ancient times. It gives knowledge about various kinds of poisoning like food poisoning, different varieties of snakes, scorpions, spiders, etc, and the quality of their venoms along with medical interventions.
  • Jara Chikitsa: This refers to Geriatrics and special attention is given to the body and mind. The deterioration of the body is slowed down with Rasayana (rejuvenative) treatments. Ayurveda focuses on the physical and mental aspects of ageing.
  • Vrishya Chikitsa: Also known as Vajikarana, this branch deals with promoting and improving the sexual ability of an individual. Factors contributing to a healthy progeny are also considered here.

Most of us are unaware of these facilities available in Ayurveda. This would be an eye opener for those who feel that Ayurveda is only for the old age or for those with history of stroke or so. Apart from the above mentioned branches, there are texts in Ayurveda which explains the various conditions of plants called Vrkshayurvdea, health conditions of animals like elephants, horses, cows etc called Hastiayurveda/ Gajayurveda, Aswayurveda and Mrgayurveda or Pashuayurveda.
Though it is a traditional ancient living system of medicine with a sound philosophical background, there is yet a need for advanced research/ acceptability for the promotion of Ayurveda.

Curd lovers- satiate your cravings

The science of medicine- Ayurveda that originated in ancient India has a
huge treasure of knowledge about the eating habits for staying hale and hearty.
Curd is one of the popular milk products that’s enjoyed by many along with
their meals. The creamy, slightly sour, curd has been a part of our diet and of
our ancestors since the Vedic times. Made by souring boiled milk naturally,
curd has a wide variety of bacteria that nurture our digestive system and boost
the overall immunity This fermented food is sour in taste and is extremely healthy
for the stomach. It is good for the gut and moisturizes the skin as well. It helps in
boosting the immune system, improves the digestion and contributes to weight
loss..A powerhouse of riboflavin, Vitamin A, Vitamin B6, Vitamin B12, and
pantothenic acid, curd also has lactic acid which helps in absorption of nutrients

Curd is sour in taste, hot in nature, is heavy to digest increases fat ,
improves strength, increases kapha and pitta (reduced Vata) and improves agni

Avoid making these mistakes while eating curd
*One should not consume curd at night. The curd is heavy to digest.  It is
also hot in potency.  Therefore, when consumed at night, it may interfere with
your sleep as extra energy is required for its digestion.  It also triggers the
secretion of mucus making the condition adverse for individuals suffering from
asthma.
As per the Ayurveda, curd pacifies vata, but increases kapha and pitta
dosha. During the night, the Kapha Dosha upsurges. Thus, if the curd is
consumed during the night, the effect of Kapha Dosha is augmented.

In case you cannot refrain yourself from eating curd at night, you can eat it only
after adding a pinch of black pepper and rock salt. Other options such as ghee,
amla, and honey can also be added to curd when you consume it at night.
Alternatively, you can substitute curd by buttermilk. It will help in clearing the
mucus secretions.
*Curd should not be heated . if you heat the curd, it can alter its properties
which can lead to suffocation and swelling in your body.
*The daily consumption of curd is prohibited in Ayurveda. It is because
curd is known to be heavy in nature and increases inflammation in the body. The
only variation that can be consumed on a regular basis is churned
buttermilk that has added spices such as rock salt, black pepper and cumin.
*One should always avoid eating curd when a person has a bleeding
disorder. Thus, if you are someone who has heavy period flow or nasal bleeding,
it is considered best to avoid curd at all in your meals.
*Do not mix your curd with fruits as it is a channel blocker incompatible
food. Long-time consumption would trigger metabolic issues and allergies.

*Curd is incompatible with meat and fish. Any combination of curd
cooked along with meats such as chicken, mutton, or fish will produce toxins in
the body.

Within Ayurveda, tulsi is known as “The Incomparable One,” “Mother
Medicine of Nature” and “The Queen of Herbs,” and is revered as an “elixir of
life” that is without equal for both its medicinal and spiritual properties.
Characteristics of the Tulsi Plant
A member of the basil family (Lamiaceae), its leaves can be green or
purple, depending on the variety. Tulsi has a pungent rasa  (taste), a heating
veerya (energetic effect), and a pungent vipaka (post-digestive effect).
Balancing for vata and kapha doshas, it may increase pittha in excess.
Not just one, there are three different types of tulsi
According to Ayurvedic texts, the three different types of tulsi are: rama
(green leaf) tulsi, shyama (purple leaf) tulsi, and vana (wild leaf) tulsi. Although
all three types of tulsi have their uses in Ayurveda, green leaved rama-tulsi is
the most widely used.
What Is Tulsi Used For?
Tulsi has many benefits for the body, mind, and spirit, offering support on
both physical and subtle levels. Some of the benefits of tulsi include:
 The herb stimulates neurotransmitters that regulate the hormones
responsible for including happiness and energy. Chewing 10-12 fresh
Tulsi leaves control stress and manage anxiety.
